Report: Hornets, Clippers discussing Lance Stephenson deal
By Vincent Frank.
According to Yahoo Sports NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, that’s exactly what Doc Rivers and company are considering. The scribe is reporting that the Clippers and Charlotte Hornets are engaged in trade discussions that would send Stephenson to Southern California for Spencer Hawes and Matt Barnes.
Yielding two valuable rotational players in this deal wouldn’t make a ton of sense. Despite limitations on offense, both Hawes and Barnes played important roles for the team this season. Giving up Barnes, who has been the Clippers primary starting small forward the past two years, would definitely disrupt team chemistry.
However, the talent that Stephenson possesses could help the Clippers overcome the juggernaut that is the Western Conference. A villainous figure in both Indiana and Charlotte over the past few seasons, the former second-round pick fell out of favor in his first year with the Hornets, scoring just 8.2 points per game and shooting 38 percent from the field. That came on the heels of him playing extremely well in leading the Pacers to the Eastern Conference Finals last year.
Though, it must be noted that a deal between these two teams is not considered imminent, which is probably a good thing for the Clippers. In reality, Barnes and Hawes is too high of a price to pay for such a divisive figure in Stephenson.
