Report: Clippers could be in the mix for Kevin Durant
Kevin Durant's free agency is the obvious big story in the upcoming summer, and now, details are starting to trickle out, like that the Clippers could be contenders for his services.
Via Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports:
If the opportunity comes to move Blake Griffin and replace him with Durant, the Clippers won’t hesitate, sources said.
Teams are calling on Griffin trades now, but Clippers president and coach Doc Rivers seems determined to play the year out with Griffin and see how far the team advances in the playoffs. Eventually, the Clippers will determine how intrigued Durant might be in becoming a Big Three with Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan.
Griffin is, of course, currently missing time because of a quad injury he sustained at the end of 2015. His time out was prolonged even further when he broke his right hand during an altercation with a member of the Clippers' equipment staff.
From a financial standpoint, working a sign-and-trade with Griffin and Durant would make sense. Griffin is on the second-to-last year of a max deal and Durant would presumably be signing for the max under a rising salary cap. If OKC's only other option was losing Durant for nothing, receiving only a year of Griffin with a chance to re-sign him the following offseason would be far from the worst-case scenario.
