Rapper Luther Campbell rips David West for taking huge pay cut to join Spurs

NBA veteran forward David West took a massive pay cut to sign with the San Antonio Spurs on Monday. Most people view it as an admirable move from an aging player who badly wants to win a championship.

Luther Campbell is not most people.

Campbell, a well-known rapper and big Miami Hurricanes booster who goes by the nickname “Uncle Luke,” went off on West and Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich in a Twitter rant.

Campbell is not the first person to take the “protect the Players Association” approach, but his argument is more than a bit over the top. West has made plenty of money during his NBA career (over $87 million according to basketball-reference.com). Working professionals turn down higher paying jobs on a daily basis for various reasons.

It’s not like Popovich bullied West the same way he bullies sideline reporters. West obviously feels that he is better off in San Antonio than Indiana, and he wants to win a ring. There’s nothing wrong with that.
