Phoenix Suns Franchise, Owner Robert Sarver Voted Worst in NBA
ESPN’s Annual Ultimate Standings rank all 122 major North American sports franchises on a variety of standards. The Phoenix Suns finished last in the NBA, and 120th overall.
The rankings rip on the Phoenix Suns for everything – their best ranking is 98th overall in affordability. 98th out of 122 is only good compared to 120th.
Is this fair? I am obviously biased towards the Phoenix Suns, but these rankings seem overly harsh. Here are the categories, and the Suns rank (out of 122).
More from Valley of the Suns
Overall: 120
Title track: 118
Ownership: 117
Coaching: 110
Players: 120
Fan relations: 119
Affordability: 98
Stadium experience: 11
Bang for the buck: 100
Change from last year: -13
Note the ’11’ rating on Stadium Experience is certainly a typo, as the ESPN article goes on to say the Suns best ranking was 98th in affordability.
They breakdown the categories further here, but most are pretty straight forward.
That is brutal across the board: the Suns are either the worst or among the worst in the NBA in every single category.
The Players ranking on 120 represents last seasons Suns, in my opinion. ESPN defines that metric as effort on the court and likability off of it. With the rise of Devin Booker and the return of Jared Dudley, I can’t see Suns fans still having that opinion.
Robert Sarver was also ranked as the worst owner in the NBA. While Sarver has made smarter moves since the 2016 trade deadline, it will clearly take years to earn back the trust of the fan base (rightfully so).
Suns fans have been burned as a whole for several years, and these rankings reflect that unfortunate truth.
So what do you think of these rankings? What’d they get wrong?
