Pau Gasol loses beard over bet

Published Sep. 13, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Beards are the new black.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Brian Wilson‘s and Houston Rockets shooting guard James Harden's beards are so popular that each has its own respective fan-run Twitter account, collectively totaling 32,137 followers. Heck, even the Red Sox are offering promotions for showing off your beard.

Given the current state of beard-sanity, it only made sense, then, for Pau and Marc Gasol to settle a bet by shaving their favorite facial accessory. Earlier in the summer, the star Spaniard centers made a wager on a competition they were having to promote their charity, The Gasol Foundation.

The bet pitted two groups of Memphis-based kids against one another, each coached by a different Gasol brother, to see which group could cumulatively lose the most weight. The kids were all given Nike+ Fuel Bands to track their progress over the eight-week competition. Apparently, Pau’s team lost.

“It’s something me and Marc wanted to do for a while,” the elder Gasol told insidesocal.com. “We were looking for a way to use our abilities off the court to do good for the community and we feel this was the best way for us to give back. It’s a good way for us to help kids around the world.”

Pau posted a video of his clean-shaven face to Twitter, but that isn’t all there is. Click over to his YouTube channel to see the other six videos, including Pau lathering up and shaving his grizzly neck beard. Check out the final product in the video below.
