Pau Gasol ignores doctor's minutes restriction, tells coach 'I will take the risk'

NBA franchises have always been a bit concerned with their players appearing in international competition. These guys are on guaranteed contracts, after all, so not only would they get paid in full in the event of an injury, the NBA club would be without their services for potentially an entire season.

So, when you hear of a star player like Pau Gasol ignoring a doctor's minutes limit, it's going to raise a few eyebrows.

Pau Gasol was in pain just before the start of the game against Poland and he had to run to the locker rooms in order to get medical treatment. However, this was the start of an amazing story.

As Spanish coach Sergio Scariolo revealed in the press conference: “The doctors told me that Pau couldn’t play more than five minutes straight. But after the first five minutes, when I asked him to come to bench he told me now. “I will take the risk”, he answered me and he had an amazing game”.

It all turned out fine in this case, and Gasol went on to have a remarkable 30-point performance in leading Spain to the quarterfinals. But you can bet that Bulls' brass will be having a chat with Gasol about this as soon as he returns.
