New York Knicks: Justin Holiday Is Here For Defense

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

New York Knicks shooting guard Justin Holiday isn’t worried about touches, shot attempts, or stroking his ego. All he wants to do is play defense.

When speaking about the New York Knicks, the list of players discussed often goes seven deep. Those players tend to be Carmelo Anthony, Brandon Jennings, Courtney Lee, Joakim Noah, Kristaps Porzingis, Derrick Rose, and Lance Thomas.

Though he may not be the most recognizable name on the roster, Justin Holiday could soon become a fan favorite.

Holiday, 27, has earned a strong measure of respect within NBA circles. He’s traveled the long road to the Association, has a tremendous work ethic, and thrived in both Europe and the D-League.

According to Marc Berman of The New York Post, Holiday’s sole focus in New York is to bring a high level of defensive intensity to the floor.

“The one thing I hate the most playing basketball is getting scored on — regardless if it’s a good shot or not,’’ Holiday said.

“That’s been my mentality since I remember. The way you win games is with defense. The reason the Warriors team was successful is we played defense well as a team and individually.”

“I’m going to make sure I contribute that to this team,’’ Holiday said of his defense. “I’m here to help — not make myself be the star. That’s not my role or why I’m here. We have enough of those players.”

Standing at 6’6″ and 185 pounds with a near 7’1″ wingspan, Holiday certainly has the physical gifts to lock opponents down.

Holiday was acquired by the Knicks as a part of the Derrick Rose trade. His value to the Knicks was established when he was kept on the roster and not replaced on the depth chart by another offseason acquisition.

Holiday’s comments about his role in New York seem to shine a light on what it is he’ll be bringing to the table.

Holiday will be the backup shooting guard behind projected starter Courtney Lee. Lee was signed to a four-year deal worth $48 million this past July, but the contract isn’t the story here.

Lee is a 3-and-D specialist who can put the ball on the floor and selflessly float within the offense.

Based on what Holiday has stated, as well as what he’s shown on the court, he’s the perfect backup. He’ll maintain a high level of defensive intensity, all the while capably spacing the floor from distance.

Holiday is also capable of attacking the basket and creating his own shot on the rare occasion that it’s needed.

If there’s anything that Knicks fans love, it’s a rugged defensive player who refuses to quit on a possession. That’s Holiday.
