NBA Rumors: Oklahoma City Thunder Lock Up Oladipo; Adams Next?

NBA Rumors: The Oklahoma City Thunder have elected to sign Victor Oladipo to a four-year, $84 million contract extension; Steven Adams next

The Oklahoma City Thunder are taking a long term chance on Victor Oladipo. After trading for him on NBA Draft night earlier this year, it makes sense.

According to Yahoo!, the Thunder and Victor Oladipo have agreed to a four-year, $84 million contract extension. To put that into prespective, the Orlando Magic re-signed Evan Fournier (who Orlando chose over Oladipo this summer) to a five-year, $85 million contract.

Not bad. Almost fair, even though Oladipo has somewhat fallen short of expectations through his short career.

Oklahoma City guard Victor Oladipo has reached agreement on a four-year, $84M extension, league sources tell The Vertical.

If you’re keeping track, on the open market, Oladipo could’ve scored $21 million extra if he was signed to a max deal. Part of the reason why Orlando traded for him early.

Despite locking up Oladipo, the Thunder aren’t done. Not yet. According to ESPN’s Royce Young, the Thunder are also expected to agree on an extension with Steven Adams. His extension could wind up in the $100 million range.

A Steven Adams extension is imminent. With system uncertainty ahead, the Thunder are locking up what they have now.

Both Adams and Oladipo were expected to hit the restricted free agent market this summer. However, ultimately, the Thunder decided that they needed to lock their two young players up before they even had the chance to hit the open market.

As ESPN’s Royce Young noted, with the unknown that will be in the system under the new CBA, the Oklahoma City Thunder have decided to simply lock up what they can – and have – right now.

Question is, of course, will it work out in the end? Considering what this franchise has been through – from losing James Harden, Jeff Green, Serge Ibaka and Kevin Durant – over the last few years it’s a legitimate concern.

Through three games this season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Victor Oladipo is averaging 17 points and four rebounds per game.
