Myers, Warriors don't need to apologize to anyone for signing Durant
The Golden State Warriors went out and signed Kevin Durant this offseason. Many criticized the move, but the Warriors don’t need to apologize to anyone.
Last week, CSN Bay Area’s Monte Poole came out with a report of Bob Myers, the Warriors’ general manager talking about the criticism to recruit a player of Kevin Durant‘s status. He said: “you remember what we had to watch?…We watched teams come here and destroy our team. We didn’t have any of those players. So I’m not going to apologize.”
Later on, Myers had to say that, “there have been some amazing teams in the NBA in the last 15, 20, 25 years. Everybody gets their turn. Maybe this is our time to see what we can do with a talented group of players.”
Myers has every right to go after a guy like Durant because he was a free agent this past summer and that’s what a general manager is supposed to do for any team in any sport. Their goal is to try to make the team better in any way possible and that’s what Myers did. People try to knock the Warriors getting Durant, but what they’re really doing is knocking Myers for doing his job and doing it better than most general managers in the NBA.
Now, as for Myers’ comments about how he “had to watch” and get his team destroyed is an intriguing perspective considering that he grew up in the Bay Area and had to watch every suffering and gut-punching loss. Fans that have been die-hards ever since they were young deserve the chance to watch a team like this because when you think of great teams, you always think of the Lakers, Bulls, Celtics, and Spurs. Not so much the Warriors.
However, now that the Warriors have started their ascension to the upper-echelon of the league since the 2012-2013 season, fans started to follow the team even more. It was even like this for the bad years of 2010-2012 with the fans coming out and support of the Warriors. The Durant addition by Myers makes it even sweeter for the fans, who have been with the team since the beginning, through all the bad and good times.
Bring on the hate, #DubNation is ready for it and so is Myers. The once embarrassing and bottom-feeder Warriors just signed one of the best scorers in NBA history and are now “light years ahead” of the free agency and there’s not one word that Myers would say to apologize for this acquisition.
