Milwaukee Bucks: Grades From 111-93 Win Over Brooklyn Nets

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 10:09 p.m. ET

It’s been tough for the Milwaukee Bucks to stay consistent this season, but Milwaukee is 4-1 through their last five games after beating the Brooklyn Nets in Brooklyn.

During the first half of the game on Thursday night, at times it felt like this was going to be the same old story for the Milwaukee Bucks. Coming off of a great game against a great team, Milwaukee was struggling to get momentum going against a lesser foe.

The Brooklyn Nets were doing Brooklyn Nets things, which is to say that they were shooting lots of threes and playing hard and smart. Those are good qualities, but Brooklyn just doesn’t have the talent to win most nights, even if they’re executing well.

Thursday night was starting to look like one of those nights where the Nets had a real chance. John Henson gave a distressed halftime interview about how poorly the game had started. Fans were doubtlessly getting their “This is so Bucks” tweets ready to go.

And then…something happened. The Bucks played up to their standards in the third quarter, dropping 38 points on the Nets and taking command of the game. Then in the fourth quarter Milwaukee’s defense stepped up, as Brooklyn scored just 15 points while the Bucks coasted to an easy win.

Who were the best and worst Bucks in this performance? How did Jason Kidd and the opposing team do? Find out all of these answers, and some more, in our grades from Milwaukee’s 111-93 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

Starters

Matthew Dellavedova

G, Milwaukee Bucks

BMatthew Dellavedova played pretty well, without making a huge impact on the game. Delly is incredibly solid most nights, and Thursday was no exception. Delly had nine points, four assists and a steal. All of his points came from beyond the arc, where he shot three-for-four on three-point attempts. This would’ve been a really good performance, but Dellavedova did have three turnovers as well. Still, when he’s making threes it’s usually good news for the Bucks.

Tony Snell

G, Milwaukee Bucks

B+Tony Snell also hit three three-pointers and no twos on Thursday, but he ended up with 13 points after making all four of his free throws. Snell had been struggling with his range from deep, so it was comforting to see him nail a few more threes against the Nets. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished an assist, all without committing any turnovers. This is the kind of game the Bucks hoped for on a near-nightly basis when they acquired Snell.

Giannis Antetokounmpo

G/F, Milwaukee Bucks

A+It’s actually almost unbelievale how good Giannis Antetokounmpo was against the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday. When the other team doesn’t have an athletic, long wing defender, there’s just no stopping Giannis. He finished with 23 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, four steals and two blocks. To top it off, Giannis committed no turnovers, made half of his field goals, and also made two three-pointers!

Jabari Parker

F, Milwaukee Bucks

AThe Bucks can beat anybody if Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jabari Parker are both playing well on any given night. They both were against the Nets on Thursday. Jabari finished with 22 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Jabari missed both of his three-point attempts, but you’d rather see him try and miss than not try at all. He missed just five total shots all night, meaning the Nets were helpless to stop Jabari when he was inside the arc.

John Henson

C, Milwaukee Bucks

AThis is exactly the sort of game the Bucks need from their starting center. John Henson is proving he should’ve been given this job years ago, or at the very least that he was worth the wait. Henson recorded 12 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and an assist against Brooklyn. He made four of his nine field goals, and didn’t miss once during his four trips to the foul line. Henson is starting to lock up the starting job in Milwaukee with performances–and wins–like these. Next: Bench

Bench

Greg Monroe

C, Milwaukee Bucks

C-There’s been an exciting change in Greg Monroe‘s game this season. Earlier in his career, Monroe was primarily a scorer, through and through. Now, when the Moose isn’t getting buckets, he’s still contributing to the team in other ways. Monroe got just two points against Brooklyn, but he also added six rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. He should really score more than two points, but seeing Monroe stay active in games is a great sign for this team going down the road.

Thon Maker

???, Milwaukee Bucks

BThon Maker played just three minutes and didn’t force any older players into an early retirement this time around, but he did record a nice block. Seeing this dude play is very exciting–maybe he should find a few minutes here and there when the game isn’t essentially over.

Miles Plumlee

C, Milwaukee Bucks

CMiles Plumlee played three minutes and missed a shot in a blowout win. $50 million well spent!

Malcolm Brogdon

G, Milwaukee Bucks

AMalcolm Brogdon is good. He’s good at defense, and good at offense, and good at having a good nickname. He’s just all-around good, basically. Only Giannis and Jabari scored more points for the Bucks than Brogdon, who put up 13 to go along with four rebounds and four assists. The fact that his threes are starting to fall is very exciting. Brogdon made three of his four attempted triples on Thursday.

Michael Beasley

F, Milwaukee Bucks

BMichael Beasley, like Greg Monroe, did not have a great scoring game against the Nets. Also like Monroe, Beas managed to add to Milwaukee even without his shots falling. Beasley scored five points, but also put up seven rebounds, one assist and one steal. Beas’ best asset is his scoring ability, but his rebounding is right up there.

Jason Terry

SG, Milwaukee Bucks

DJason Terry is starting to slow down and seems to be preparing for descent. He missed four of his five shots and made one of his four three-point attempts. He did record a block though, which is definitely one of the more surprising aspects of this game. Still, how much more fuel does JET really have at this point?

Mirza Teletovic

F, Milwaukee Bucks

BMirza Teletovic took eight shots, and all eight of them were three-point attempts. That’s just fine, as long as he continues to make enough of them. He made three on Thursday, which definitely works. Mirza also added seven rebounds, a nice total considering he played just 19 minutes against Brooklyn.

Rashad Vaughn

G, Milwaukee Bucks

CHe’s back! He didn’t do much in just three minutes of play besides cough up a turnover, but Rashad Vaughn was back with the Bucks, if only for a night. Next: Jason Kidd

Head Coach

Jason Kidd

Coach, Milwaukee Bucks

B+Jason Kidd is starting to get good at resting players. Giannis led the team in minutes, but he only played 30 of them. That allows more players to get involved, and keeps the stars fresher for longer. He also barely played Plumlee, which is probably the right decision at this point despite the contract he signed. Terry is still getting too many minutes that should go to Brogdon/Vaughn, but whatever. It was a good game, and there were no obvious miscues here. Next: Brooklyn Nets

Opposition

Brooklyn Nets

Atlantic, 5-13

With this win, the Bucks moved to above .500, at 9-8. Hopefully Milwaukee can reach double-digit wins in a rematch with Brooklyn in Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon.
