Mavericks general manager opens up about trade deadline

Published Feb. 20, 2015 12:24 p.m. ET

The Dallas Mavericks did not make a trade during yesterday's deadline bonanza, but that doesn't mean they weren't one of the league's more active teams. Here's the team's general manager, Donnie Nelson, talking about how he spent the afternoon. He sure sounded busy.

“We made lots of calls and we received lots of calls,” he said. “More than anything, you want to know what’s going on out there. Sometimes there’s opportunities to develop a little interference, which certainly has its place, to make sure things go East.”

Nelson is one of the league's smarter decision-makers, and well before yesterday's deadline he did a fantastic job molding Dallas' roster. Blockbuster trades, like the one for Rajon Rondo, coupled with smart buyout signings (Amar'e Stoudemire) do more than get Nelson off the hook for not making any last minute alterations.

Dallas is clearly happy with where they stand. And, all things considered, they should be.
