J.P. Tokoto agrees to one-year deal with 76ers

J.P. Tokoto has agreed to a one-year deal with the Sixers, according to a report from Yahoo Sports/FOX Sports 1 NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

The details of this are fairly interesting. Tokoto initially was set to play overseas or in the D-League, but bets on himself here with a non-guaranteed deal.

The Sixers could waive him before his contract becomes fully guaranteed in January if he doesn't produce. But if he can earn a spot on the roster -- or even better, a spot in the regular rotation -- then Tokoto could be in line for a qualifying offer in excess of $1 million next season in order for Philadelphia to be able to retain his rights.

Tokoto, the 58th overall pick out of North Carolina in the 2015 NBA draft, agreed to a non-guaranteed $525,000 tender offer, clearing the way for him to possibly become a restricted free agent in 2016.

The Sixers would have to make him a qualifying offer to keep matching rights – or risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent.

For Tokoto, this season will be an opportunity to show the 76ers that he has staying power in the NBA and potentially increase his second-year salary significantly.
