Detroit Pistons sign Trey Freeman to compete at backup point guard
The Detroit Pistons add to their depth at point guard, singing Trey Freeman to compete for the third point duties.
The Detroit Pistons have made another addition to their roster, signing Trey Freeman, point guard from Old Dominion, to compete for their third point guard spot behind Reggie Jackson and Ish Smith.
The Detroit Pistons are bringing another guard to training camp.
Old Dominion product Trey Freeman agreed to a partially guaranteed contract with the team, his agent told the Virginian-Pilot.
“I’m just excited,” Freeman told the newspaper. “I’m going to go in there with a chip on my shoulder, and try to do whatever I can to get on the official roster.”
Freeman led Conference USA in scoring this past season (22.1 points per game). The Virginia Beach native started his college career at Campbell before transferring to ODU for his final two seasons.
Listed at 6-feet-2 and 180 pounds, he worked out for the Pistons leading up to the draft. After going unpicked in June, he played for the Houston Rockets in the NBA summer league.
Another good move by Stan Van Gundy and Jeff Bower. The odds of Freeman making the roster is slim, but competition brings out the best in players and that’s exactly what Van Gundy hopes to accomplish in training camp here.
Training camp is just around the corner. Expect the battle for third point guard duties to be one of the biggest camp battles.
