Damian Lillard on comparisons to musically-inclined athletes: 'I think it's different because I can actually rap'
You know it's August when Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard is consistently in the news for his ability to rap more than anything related to basketball—his job, the sport that pays him millions of dollars to be great.
Here's another feature, courtesy of the Deseret News, on Lillard's headline-grabbing off-court hobby, and why he believes he's had success with rap while other athletes fall short:
“I think it’s different because I can actually rap...A lot of athletes, they try to go out there and rap, and people don’t like it. When I decided to put out some tracks, I figured there would be a lot of people saying ‘Just stick to basketball,’ but the feedback was actually positive. I put out six tracks in six weeks, and each of them got, like, millions of views. You get the feedback, ‘He can actually rap.’ That was a good feeling.”
Compared to other athletes, Lillard is a good rapper. It's fact. If he puts out an album, people will probably listen. But on the court his future isn't so rosy. After losing every teammate who was in the starting lineup with him last season, Lillard's Blazers will struggle this year.
Maybe he can write a song about them not making the playoffs.
