Charlotte Hornets Exercise Third-Year Option on Frank Kaminsky's Contract

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Charlotte Hornets have picked up the third-year option on Frank Kaminsky‘s contract, keeping him in the Queen City for the 2017-18 season.

Entering his second season in the NBA, Frank Kaminsky has shown promise in his young career. The Charlotte Hornets believe in their big man as they exercised the third-year option on his contract going forward. Although it hasn’t been made official, Adi Joseph of Sporting News tweeted that “Rich Cho walked into the Hornets locker room to deliver a letter to Frank Kaminsky, which turns out to be his third-year option.”

Most third-year options are formalities as almost every team picks up the option on their young prospects. But they aren’t guaranteed as the Hornets didn’t pick up P.J. Hairston‘s last season. Everyone expected Charlotte to exercise the option on Kaminsky as he was their first-round pick only a year ago.

They selected Frank with the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. The 23-year old big man’s salary will increase from $2.7 million this season to $2.8 million next year. It may be a small bump but it will increase even more in the 2018-19 season when it jumps to $3.6 million.

More from Swarm and Sting

Kaminsky finally made his debut for Charlotte against the Boston Celtics this season after missing the first two games due to a foot injury. He scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds in his regular season premier. Frank also had a strong preseason that excited fans and the organization because of his development.

The 6’11 power forward averaged 7.5 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game, and 1.2 assists per game in his rookie year last season. He played in 81 games, starting three, and averaging 21.1 minutes per game. He also shot 41% from the field and 33.7% from the three-point line.

After a strong start to his professional career, Kaminsky will now look to improve in his sophomore season. He has the chance to be an important player under Steve Clifford in a more prominent role this year. With this move, the Hornets have now resolved all of their options for this season.

The decision to exercise Frank’s option was a fairly easy one for the Charlotte Hornets. He has been a productive player during his time with the team and he still has room to develop. Kaminsky could be in the Queen City for many years to come.
