Celtics to debut new 'Lucky Alternate' logo for 2014-15 season

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:57 p.m. ET

The Boston Celtics are changing things up next season, as the team will have a new alternate logo for the 2014-15 NBA season called the "Lucky Alternate."

The Celtics will debut their new logo this week after 18 months of in-house work. The logo features "Lucky The Leprechaun" as a white silhouette, paying homage to the logo created by Red Auerbach's brother, Zang, in the 1960s.

The logo will first be used on Adidas team apparel and merchandise on sale through the team store on Celtics.com, according to the Boston Globe's Baxter Holmes.

"It's such an iconic silhouette that people, when they see it, they'll know exactly what it is," Shawn Sullivan, the team's chief marketing officer, told the Boston Globe.

The Celtics decided to create a new logo because it had been 16 years since the team had debuted its last new logo, a secondary shamrock, Celtics creative director and this logo's designer Keith Sliney told the Globe.

"We thought it was a good time to create a mark, something new, something fresh, yet with a lot of history behind it," Sliney said.

Sliney said that the alternate logo will not replace Boston's current main logo, and there aren't any plans of placing the new logo on jerseys, according to the the Globe.
