Cam Payne: Thunder Guard Fractures Foot in First Scrimmage

After a week of happiness in Oklahoma City, the Thunder were dealt a huge blow when Cam Payne went down in the Blue and White Scrimmage.

Cam Payne doesn’t deserve this. The Thunder’s little ball of happiness and prospective backup point guard fractured his right foot, the same foot he had surgery on over the offseason.

Payne went under the needle for a Jones Fracture near the end of July, but he was cleared for training camp by team doctors. Those same doctors announced that the two injuries aren’t related, but it’s never a good sign to see recurring foot injuries.

As of now, there is no timetable for a Cam Payne return. A specialist will review Oayne’s x-rays again next week and determine whether or not the 22-year old will need another surgery.

Where do the Thunder turn now?

Luckily for OKC fans, Sam Presti always has a backup-backup-backup plan. The Thunder signed veteran point guard Ronnie Price away from the Suns; that only leaves them with two lead ballhandlers. But not so fast…

More from Thunderous Intentions

Enter Semaj Christon. Christon has been around the Thunder organization since 2014 when his draft rights were traded to the Thunder. The former Xavier guard played one season for the OKC Blue before playing overseas last season; he also has played for the Thunder’s Summer League team the last three seasons.

Christon played fantastic this summer, with some speculating he would be the third-string pg before the signing of Price. Instead, the Thunder signed him to a partially guaranteed contract.

With Cam Payne likely out the beginning of the season, it would only make sense to give Christon a roster spot. Once Payne is back, it is unlikely that the Thunder will keep Christon on the roster unless the injury bug hits harder.
