The Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos officially kicked off the NFL season last night. While the Broncos followed up their Super Bowl victory with another win over the Panthers, there wasn’t a lack of controversy. The headlines this morning are dominated by debate surrounding the helmet-to-helmet hits that Cam Newton took in the second half of the game.

The NFL has made several rule changes in the last few years to help prevent traumatic brain injury, but a handful of plays from last night seemed to push that boundary. The public discourse surrounding the nature of the NFL has changed drastically in the last decade among fans. More and more people are voicing their concerns about the long-term health implications that playing football brings to the table. This prompted C.J. McCollum to take to his Twitter account last night and share this:
McCollum references Will Smith’s movie “Concussion” to drive home his thoughts on the final quarter of play from the Broncos and Panthers game. From big budget movies to professionals from other sports – the conversation surrounding the NFL is rapidly changing. Given the rule changes and new injury protocols, the NFL appears to be listening to the debate as well.
