In this 2016-17 Atlanta Hawks Season Countdown, we will be counting down the days leading up to the Hawks’ first regular season game.

Here at Soaring Down South, we are counting down the days until the Atlanta Hawks 2016-17 season begins. We’ll continue at 30 days until the regular season starts for the Hawks, highlighting one of the greatest shot blockers in Hawk history.

7.8 PG, 9.3 RPG, 0.9 APG, 4.3 BPG in 30.9 MPG

The Clemson product, whose #30 was the first number retired in the school’s history, is still known today as one of the league’s greatest pure shot-blockers. During the ’82-83 season, Rollins blocked a league-high 4.3 shots, and snagged 9.3 rebounds per game. He commanded the paint for one of the deepest Hawks teams in the team’s history. Dan Roundfield, Eddie Johnson, and a rookie Dominique Wilkins carried the scoring load, while playing above-average defense.

Rollins played a total of eleven seasons with the Hawks, before two seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1988-89 to 1989-90. At 35 years old, and with 13 seasons under his belt, his career had a few more stops. He played 37 games with the Pistons in 1990, and two seasons in Houston, before finishing his career with the Orlando Magic.To display the longevity of Rollins’ career, he played beside both Penny Hardaway and Dominque Wilkins. As rookies.

Jones’ time as a Hawk was short, to the tune of 28 games in 2013. He was traded from the Dallas Mavericks, in exchange for Anthony Morrow. Jones played five playoff games in addition to his regular season outings, starting in none. As a Hawk, he averaged 3.1 points and 1.1 rebounds per game.

The 20th pick in the storied 2003 Draft, Jones was instantly traded from the Celtics to the Grizzlies for Kendrick Perkins. He played four years in Memphis, before making four stops across the country. After his half a season in Atlanta, Jones didn’t play an NBA game in the next season. He won a ring with the Cavaliers, and cemented his status as one of the worst players to ever win a NBA championship.
