A tweet from LeBron James will run you $140,000

Celebrities occasionally agree to post a sponsored tweet, one in which they are compensated for advertising a particular company or product.

According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, a 140-character message from Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James is worth $140,000. That figure came from Opendorse, which Rovell calls “a company that specializes in executing and monetizing digital and social media campaigns for athletes.”

Opendorse CEO Blake Lawrence said a tweet from LeBron would reach 23 million people, and the $140,000 price would be a bargain.

“It would cost you five times more to reach that many people with a TV ad.”

That’s a staggering number, so it’s no surprise that companies have adopted the efficient method of reaching out to potential customers.

But that doesn’t mean athletes are willing to accept a large payday simply for the money. Lawrence revealed James’ representation recently declined a six-figure offer for a single tweet.

The growth of social media has undoubtedly impacted reputations of many athletes, and the revelation of how much a single post can be worth is absolutely fascinating.

Kevin Durant ($66,553), Kobe Bryant ($42,389), Floyd Mayweather ($34,924) and Dwight Howard ($34,290) round out the top five for most-valuable tweet.
