Wood Brothers respond after not being granted a charter
One team notably missing from the 36 that will be guaranteed automatic entry into every race under NASCAR's new charter system is the Wood Brothers, the sport's oldest continuously operating team which has been in existence since 1950.
To be charter-eligible, a team must have attempted every Sprint Cup race since 2013. There is, however, the option to buy a charter from an owner whose team was granted one under the new rules. Joe Gibbs Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing, for example, are both buying a charter for one of their respective teams from Rob Kauffman, the former majority owner of Michael Waltrip Racing.
The Wood Brothers, who are competing in NASCAR's top series full time this year with Ryan Blaney, last ran on a full-time basis in 2008.
