Will Gibbs enter Bowyer talks?
It appears the negotiations between Clint Bowyer and Richard Childress Racing have stalled.
Last week at Pocono Raceway, team owner Richard Childress said the deal “was in Clint’s hands,” but Bowyer didn’t seem optimistic this weekend at Watkins Glen International.
Bowyer, 31, is currently 12th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup points standings, but has yet to win a race this season. He’s currently 41 points outside of a top 10 spot in the standings, which would guarantee him a spot in the Chase.
With Roush Fenway Racing winning the Carl Edwards’ sweepstakes, is it possible that Joe Gibbs Racing would be interested in Bowyer?
“I would say it’s pretty far from even thinking about it right now,” said JGR president J.D. Gibbs. “Clint’s a great driver—I’d say that in a heartbeat, yeah. My thing is like, I think Richard and those guys, hopefully they can work it out and make a fit, so I’m not really in that one.”
Sidenote
JGR is expected to announce on Tuesday whether the No. 11 Fed Ex Camry of Denny Hamlin will run a Toyota Racing Development engine at Michigan International Speedway next weekend.
“It’s a huge undertaking pulling that off,” said Lee White, president and GM of TRD U.S.A. “If there was even a hint that we can’t do it with a huge amount of success then we won’t do it.”
