Tony Stewart's trying season continues.
Running just outside the top 20 in Saturday night's Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway, Stewart's No. 14 Chevrolet slowed dramatically with what appeared to be a tire problem resulting from contact with Jamie McMurray.
With Stewart nursing his car up high on the track, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Jeb Burton came roaring past before Stenhouse moved up into Burton, sending the second-generation driver for a spin on Lap 143 of 267.
Running just behind Stenhouse and Burton when the two collided, Stewart hit the wall and spun down the track to avoid being collected by Burton's spinning machine.
Rookie Matt DiBenedetto also was involved.
"We were four-wide going into (Turn) 1 and just really got jumbled up there and I got in the back of the 26 (Burton)," said Stenhouse, who finished 11th. "I kind of slid and got in the fence and then we had to make some different adjustments to get the car better after that."
Stewart suffered only minor damage to his car and was initially able to continue on without losing a lap or significant track position.
He finished 33rd, however, the first driver two laps down.
Stewart, a three-time Sprint Cup Series champion and the co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, has just one top-10 finish and no top-fives in 18 outings this season.
