Practice 2 results from RIR as Casey Mears is fastest

There was a surprise name atop the speed charts in Friday afternoon’s final Happy Hour round of practice for the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

Casey Mears, who hasn’t qualified better than 14th all year long, put the No. 13 Germain Racing Chevrolet on the top of the board with a lap of 120.557 miles per hour.

Later this afternoon, Mears will go for a pole, something he last achieved on July 15, 2007 at Chicagoland Speedway. If Mears can seal the deal in qualifying, it would be a huge story.

Second fast was another Chevrolet, the Chip Ganassi-owned No. 42 driven by Kyle Larson, who ran 120.096 mph. Martin Truex Jr. was third in a Toyota, followed by Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle.

Qualifying takes place this afternoon at 5:45 p.m. ET.

Saturday night’s race will be the 26th and final event in the Sprint Cup regular season. The Federated Auto Parts 400 will decide the final field for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
