NASCAR: Darlington Starting Grid After Qualifying Cancelled

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

With only two races left before the start of the NASCAR Chase, a lot of drivers on the Chase bubble were looking forward to NASCAR qualifying in Darlington in the hopes of earning for front-row spot.

However, the weather did not cooperate with NASCAR and as a result all on-track activities were cancelled on Friday and that included qualifying. The lack of qualifying means that those drivers close in the points will start close on the track with the drivers they are battling with to get into the NASCAR Chase. Since there was no track activity on Friday, the starting grid for Darlington was set on points which puts Kevin Harvick on point for the race on Sunday.

On Saturday the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be back on the track (weather permitting) for a couple of rounds of practice ahead of Sunday’s race in Darlington. Last weekend Kyle Larson punched his ticket to the Chase by winning his first race of the 2016 season and the first race of his NASCAR career.

Sunday in Darlington winless drivers like Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney and Austin Dillon will be looking to do the same. Sunday will also be one of two last chances for a driver like Kasey Kahne, who also hasn’t won this season, to get over the hump and push his way into the 2016 NASCAR Chase.
