NASCAR cancels Friday's on-track activities at Darlington
With Hurricane Hermine expected to race up the east coast, Darlington Raceway could be in the bullseye of nasty weather for Friday and possibly Saturday.
Darlington Raceway sits just off Interstate 95 that runs up and down the east coast of the United States, and because of its location it is in the path of Hurricane Hermine which is expected to make landfall in Florida tonight. Its current path will bring tons of rain to South Carolina, and because of its expected impact on the track, NASCAR has decided to cancel all on track activities for Friday ahead of the storm.
It is not known how the hurricane will affect Saturday’s events. Much will depend on the storm’s speed as it crosses the southern half of the country, although Xfinity and Sprint Cup Series qualifying have both been called off and fields will be set according to the rulebook. Sunday evening’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 should not be affected though.
Weather forecasts have predicted clearing sometime Saturday afternoon, so the Xfinity VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 could be delayed from its scheduled 3:30 p.m. start, but is expected to be run.
NASCAR has adjusted the Sprint Cup competition schedule with the cancellation of qualifying and replaced it with two practice sessions to give drivers and teams more on-track time to prepare for Sunday night’s race.
The field for the Bojangles’ Southern 500 will be set according to owner’s points, and 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion and current point’s leader, Kevin Harvick, piloting the No. 4 Busch Beer Chevrolet SS, will start from the pole. It will be the first time he has led the field to the green at Darlington. He earned his first and only Southern 500 victory to date in 2014.
The Bojangles’ Southern 500 is scheduled to start on Sunday, September 4 at 6:00 p.m. ET, and will be aired live on NBC, MRN Radio and Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 90.
