Monster Mile takes bite out of cars of Trevor Bayne, Michael Annett
After a relatively calm start to Sunday's FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks, the Monster Mile finally took a bite out of the competition.
The first major incident of the day took place on Lap 174 when No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford of Trevor Bayne was racing on the inside of the No. 46 HScott Motorsports Chevrolet of Michael Annett off Turn 4.
As the two came up the banking, Annett got into the right rear of Bayne, sending him nose-first into the outside wall. The contact sent Bayne sliding head-on into the inside wall before sliding back up the banking and coming to a rest at the top of the track in Turn 1.
Annett was unable to keep his car under him and slid down the frontstretch, getting hit by his teammate Justin Allgaier.
The incident brought out the third caution of the day at Dover International Speedway.
While Allgaier was able to drive away, he took his car behind the wall for further repairs.
Annett was able to continue, but was 12 laps down in 40th by Lap 200.
With heavy damage to the nose of his No. 6 Ford, Bayne climbed from the car and walked down the banking to the ambulance. As a result, the 2011 Daytona 500 winner was called to the NASCAR hauler after the race.
NASCAR requires that competitors remain in their cars after an incident until safety workers arrive on the scene. The only exception is if the car is on fire or if there is smoke in the cockpit.
