Hamlin mistake results in crash, big points hit

Hamlin went from first place into the wall at Auto Club Speedway.

After a swift and solid pit stop, the No. 11 exited the pit lane by a nose in front of Juan Pablo Montoya. Hamlin elected to take the outside lane on the Lap 190 restart, turned down directly in front of Montoya and was punted into the pit road wall.

"I thought I was clear and misjudged it," Hamlin said. "I got to apologize to the team. They deserve better than that. They got me out front. It was a bad mistake."

Montoya couldn't believe what he saw out his windshield.

"What the heck was that about? He just turned left," Montoya said over the radio. "I don't blame it on anyone. He just came down and that was it."

Hamlin returned to the track on Lap 213, but seven laps into his run NASCAR directed the No. 11 car to the garage for running "too slow."

Hamlin entered the race sixth in the point standings but will drop after finishing 36th.
