Greg Biffle's Darlington throwback gets special 'Underbird' touch
One week ago, Greg Biffle and Roush Fenway Racing unveiled their throwback paint scheme for Sunday night's Bojangles' Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
And now the finishing touch has been added to Biffle's No. 16, honoring 1992 Premier Series champion Alan Kulwicki ahead of NASCAR's Labor Day classic.
Prior to the 1992 Hooters 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway -- the final race of the season that featured a tight battle for the title between Kulwicki, Davey Allison and Bill Elliott -- Kulwicki received approval from NASCAR and Ford to change the "Thunderbird" lettering on the front bumper of his No. 7 car to "Underbird."
Kulwicki felt like he was the underdog in the contention for the championship being an owner-driver, while also trailing Allison by 30 points heading into the finale.
Kudos to Ford and Hooters for making the special tribute possible.
