Flashback Friday: The most spectacular Pocono crashes ever
Pocono Raceway is unique to all of NASCAR.
It's the only track on the circuit with three corners.
Each of those three corners is completely different and all three are modeled after turns at other tracks. Turn 1 is modeled after the long defunct Trenton (N.J.) Speedway, Turn 2 after Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Turn 3 after the Milwaukee Mile.
It's impossible to set up a car for optimal handling in all three corners on the same lap; by its design, Pocono is a place where crew chiefs have to compromise on setups.
Pocono is also an extremely fast track with the longest front straightaway in NASCAR.
When things go wrong here, they can go wrong very quickly. NASCAR Hall of Fame member Bobby Allison's career ended at Pocono when he nearly died after getting t-boned on the opening lap of the 1988 Miller High-Life 500.
And as you can see in the accompanying videos, there have been plenty of other terrifying crashes at Pocono over the years.
