Earnhardt Ganassi names tech director
John Probst has been named to the new technical director position for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.
For the last five seasons, the 40-year-old native of Williamsport, Pa., has worked with Red Bull Racing, a team with an unclear status for 2012. Last September, he was promoted to oversee its competition department. Most recently, Probst held the technical director’s role.
Probst spent more than a decade at Ford Motor Co. and was involved with Ford Racing Technology as a vehicle dynamics supervisor. He was Champ Car program manager and worked with Jackie Stewart in Formula One. Probst holds degrees in physics and mechanical engineering.
He will begin his new role in mid-October.
EGR drivers Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya won four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races last season and finished 14th and 17th, respectively in the points standings. In 2011, the teammates are winless in the first 28 races. McMurray has two top-five finishes for the season and is 27th in the points. Montoya’s best finish was third at Las Vegas in March. He is currently 19th in points.
