Dakar Rally set to start in South America
Champions Carlos Sainz and Cyril Despres return to defend their titles when the Dakar Rally starts Saturday in Buenos Aires.
Officials say 430 vehicles in four categories - cars, bikes, quads and trucks - are expected to begin the race that will cover 5,903 miles through northern Argentina and along the coast of Chile.
Sainz won the car category and Despres claimed the bike title last year.
NASCAR racer Robby Gordon will be competing in the event for the sixth time as a driver/owner.
It's the third straight year the race has been held in the two South American countries. The rally was held through 2007 in Africa, but moved for security reasons.
The start Saturday is a ceremonial leg with the drivers following a 230-mile route northwest to Victoria. The first full race day is Sunday.
The event ends on Jan. 16 in Buenos Aires.
