All-Star Race qualifying cancelled by weather at Charlotte
Qualifying for Saturday night's Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET (FS1), was cancelled by inclement weather in the area.
But now the weather has cleared up and the track-drying process is nearing completion, with NASCAR announcing that driver introductions will commence at 9:05 p.m. ET.
The Sprint Cup cars were on pit road, preparing for the qualifying session, when thunder and lightning in the area forced NASCAR officials to have crew members push the cars back to their respective garage stalls.
Shortly after 7 p.m., it started raining lightly in the garage area. Within a few minutes it began raining much more heavily, putting all track activity on indefinite hold.
The rain lasted until around 8 p.m., after which a caravan of jet dryers hit the 1.5-mile track to begin the drying process.
The Sprint All-Star Race (also on FS1) is now tentatively scheduled for a 9:30 p.m. ET green flag, if there is no more rain and the track is able to be completely dried in time.
NASCAR has announced that the 20-car All-Star field will be set by ownership points, with Kevin Harvick on the pole for the race that is scheduled for 113 laps over three segments -- two 50-lap segments and one finishing 13-lap shootout, with $1 million going to the winner.
