Supercross: Roczen puts an end to Dungey's winning streak in Phoenix
Ken Roczen won Saturday night’s Monster Energy Supercross event at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. In doing so, he put an end to Ryan Dungey’s three-race-long winning streak.
The riders were faced with a tricky circuit Saturday night in their first visit to the stadium. With massive whoops sections, an outdoors section and a long run into the first corner, incidents were prominent throughout the event, with 250SX competitors Jordan Smith and Zach Osborne finding themselves involved in vicious incidents. Smith’s heat race incident, which occurred while he was leading, kept him out for the rest of the night.
In 450SX, Davi Millsaps looked to continue his impressive pace after winning his heat race, as he took the holeshot at the start of the main. However, Roczen soon passed him around the outside for the top spot, and Millsaps found himself shuffled back to fifth by the halfway point. Up front, however, it wasn’t smooth sailing for Roczen, as Eli Tomac was keeping him honest throughout the duration of the event. However, Tomac was unable to make any inroads, and ended up losing second position to Dungey in the closing laps.
In 250SX, Christian Craig became the second first-time winner in the last two races. Last week, Cooper Webb retired from the 250SX main with a mechanical failure, allowing Joey Savatgy to take the win and the points lead. This time, however, Webb was a victim of his own mistake, crashing while battling Craig for the win. Webb was able to get back up and finish second.
With his win, Craig became the 101st winner in the Monster Energy Supercross 250SX class in just his 16th start. Savatgy rounded out the podium in third and now finds himself tied with Webb for the points lead, although Webb takes the top spot due to having three wins this season to Savatgy’s one.
