Following the opening two rounds at Monday's Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, the top 10 racers in each class had solidified their positions in the Countdown to the Championship.

The 10th entrant into the Top Fuel Countdown was determined in the first round when Terry McMillen red-lighted and was not able to advance, falling just one point short of Leah Pritchett, although she was also eliminated in Round 1.

In Funny Car's Round 1 eliminations, Chad Head defeated John Force while Alexis DeJoria lost out to Del Worsham, helping Head keep his Countdown chances alive. However, Head still had to try and make it to the final, but he was defeated by Ron Capps in Round 2, and so Alexis DeJoria secured the final Countdown spot.

In Pro Stock, Elite Motorsports teammates Jeg Coughlin Jr. and Erica Enders were both eliminated in the first round. However, Enders was safely in the Countdown due to her teammate's elimination. Quite simply, if Alex Laughlin won his Round 2 race against Shane Gray, he would be in while Jeg Coughlin Jr. would be out. But the race did not turn out in Laughlin's favor, as Gray took a holeshot win, and so Coughlin advanced to the Countdown.

Several riders were fighting for just a select few spots in Pro Stock Motorcycle, although many of those spots were secured in the first round as Hector Arana, Chip Ellis, Matt Smith and Hector Arana Jr. all put their names up on the board. Cory Reed secured the 10th spot when he defeated Angelle Sampey - who red-lighted - in Round 2.
