MotoGP: Fantastic Marquez maintains winning form in complicated TT race
In another day of magic from Marc Marquez, the Spanish speedster won his eighth consecutive race of the season to set another high-water mark in MotoGP.
With his win in the DutchTT, Marquez can now claim to be the world's fastest man on two wheels, and perhaps fastest swimmer.
This win could be the defining performance of Marquez's season, and again raises the prospect that he is capable of winning all 18 races this season.
At over 100 mph Marquez took the checkered flag performing a breaststroke swimming action â spreadeagled across his bike with feet and arms in the air - in a creative celebration of rain hit race.
Marquez remains untouchable in MotoGP and at Assen he again dismantled the reputations of the world's best riders.
Italian rider Andrea Dovizioso was also in brilliant form, finishing second on the Ducati GP14, which had been outclassed in dry track conditions. Dani Pedrosa was third, 10 seconds behind.
The Dutch TT victory makes Marquez the youngest ever rider to win eight straight MotoGP races at the age of 21 years and 131 days. He takes this record from the legendary Mike Hailwood.
This race was a day for someone to challenge Marquez's superiority in uncertain weather conditions that forced a complicated strategy under flag-to-flag rules.
But Marquez was up to it, forcing the pace early with Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso, and then executing a pit-stop to switch to slick tires on a drying track.
"It was incredible, before the race I was quite nervous because these conditions nobody wanted because it is so dangerous and complicated to know the best strategy," Marquez said.
"I started on rain tires because it was too dangerous to start on slicks and then when I changed bikes I made a mistake and ran wide.
"Dovizioso was ahead at that point and I would have been happy with second and with more rain with 10 laps to go I caught and passed Dovi."
His main championship rivals never threatened Marquez.
Yamaha stars Valentino Rossi (4th) and Jorge Lorenzo (13th) were adrift of the race winning pace on the Assen circuit which has always heavily favored their M1 bikes.
