MotoGP 2015: Faster and closer than ever before
Over two decades in grand prix racing, Valentino Rossi has seen it all, but never a MotoGP championship like the one unfolding in 2015.
It is faster, closer and more difficult to win.
And there are three factory teams - Honda, Yamaha, Ducati - with six riders who are dominating the squabble for the podium spots at each race.
For moment it is down to five with Spain's Repsol Honda factory rider Dani Pedrosa recovering from arm pump surgery and not due back racing until the Spanish Grand Prix.
After two races of an 18-race season, there have been two different winners - Rossi and defending world champion Marc Marquez.
At both races - Qatar and Texas - Ducati's stunning new GP 15 has been on the podium and will soon threaten for race wins.
This Sunday's Argentine Grand Prix is the third race of a season in which Rossi feels gaining maximum points on the days you don't win will be crucial to the championship outcome.
"It is clear that once Dani is back we will be six riders at the front," Rossi said.
"To arrive on the podium now is just more difficult, you have to be at the maximum and if you make a mistake or are not perfect with the bike maybe you will lose more points."
Rossi has a first and third from the opening two races and leads the championship going into the Argentine GP.
His Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo has a pair of fourth places and has not made the dynamic start to the campaign that his pre-season form suggested.
Honda star Marquez, who was back to his winning ways in Austin last Sunday, knows that this season a mistakes like the one that he made in Qatar will be costly.
"Now when you make a mistake you can finish fifth or sixth like I did in Qatar and this is when you can lose a lot of points," Marquez said.
"This is good because the championship will be more open until the end.
"At the moment both Andrea (Dovizioso) and Valentino look strong but with Valentino's experience I think he will be really strong over the season.
"But while the focus is on Andrea and Valentino we must not forget Jorge, for sure he will be there.
'What is important is that if you cannot win it is better to finish on the podium."
It was Marquez who dominated the 2014 season winning 10 races in row and 13 in total but even he feels a repeat of that winning streak is unlikely.
The Ducati challenge is being led by Dovizioso, a fast and intelligent rider who backed by the emerging talent of Andrea Iannone who claimed his first podium with third Qatar.
Going into Sunday's Argentine GP just five points separates the top three in the standings with Rossi on 41 points, Dovizioso 40 and Marquez 36.
