Johnson tops field 4th straight year
Defending Pro Stock champion Allen Johnson topped Mile-High NHRA Nationals qualifying Saturday for the fourth straight year and fifth time overall.
Seeking his fifth victory at Bandimere Speedway and fourth in the past five years, Johnson claimed the top spot with a 6.949-second run at 198.23 in a Dodge Avenger.
''I think we have a really good race set up for my car,'' Johnson said. ''So we want to go out there tomorrow and secure that win.''
Steve Torrence led the Top Fuel field, Cruz Pedregon topped the Funny Car order, and Adam Arana was the fastest in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Torrence broke the track speed record at 319.60 mph, finishing in 3.880 seconds.
''We've been struggling this season,'' Torrence said. ''The track came around to us tonight. It made it to the end and I wasn't expecting it to run that quick. I'm really happy. Maybe we're turning that corner and car is going to start doing better. It is pretty cool to have your name on the top of the list when you come to Bandimere.''
Pedregon secured his third No. 1 qualifying position of the season and 53rd overall with a 4.073 at 307.37 in a Toyota Camry. Arana claimed his first career No. 1 qualifying position with a run of 7.242 at 184.47 on a Buell.
