FONTANA, Calif. (AP) Rookie IndyCar driver Mikhail Aleshin has been upgraded to stable condition after undergoing a procedure for a chest injury from his horrific crash during a practice session.
IndyCar announced Aleshin's improvement Saturday before its season-ending race at Fontana.
Aleshin was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center on Friday night after his car flew and spun into the air in Turn 4 at Fontana. The Russian driver spun up the track and collided with Charlie Kimball, and Aleshin's car ripped a large hole in the catch fencing.
Aleshin was taken from the track in an ambulance and airlifted to the hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition with broken ribs, a broken right collarbone, a concussion and an unspecified chest injury.
Aleshin is 15th in the IndyCar points standings.
