Formula E: 18-car field heads to Punta del Este
Just 18 cars will take the green on Saturday in Punta del Este as the Trulli Formula E Team has officially withdrawn from the championship.
However, the field will be back up to 20 cars next season with the return of Jaguar to auto racing.
As for the other nine teams, their drivers will continue to slug it out on the Uruguayan streets with the field chasing Putrajaya winner Lucas di Grassi in the points. Sebastien Buemi, after winning the season-opening race in Beijing, sits second in the points.
The Punta del Este ePrix was one of the more eventful races of last season, featuring four Safety Car periods that led to a two-lap shootout at the end. The shootout ended when newcomer Jean-Eric Vergne broke down from second with two laps to go, allowing Buemi to take the checkered flag.
The FIA Formula E website has noted that the coastal elements surrounding the Punta del Este racetrack, such as wind, sand and warm temperatures, could provide the drivers with some additional challenges on Saturday. This news should be taken seriously by the Formula E teams and drivers, considering the fact that hot weather contributed to a race of attrition last time out in Putrajaya.
The first driver switch of the 2015-2016 Formula E season has taken place, with Oliver Rowland taking over Nick Heidfeld’s ride for Saturday’s ePrix after Heidfeld was injured in a crash in Putrajaya.
