Earnhardt Jr. said lingering symptoms kept him from racing
DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) A disappointed Dale Earnhardt Jr. understands his concussion symptoms are still too pervasive to return to the Sprint Cup Series this season, but feels confident about his racing future.
Earnhardt spoke Sunday at Darlington Raceway, two days after announcing he would end his racing year and planned to return in time for the 2017 season.
Earnhardt, speaking prior to the Southern 500, said ''I definitely don't belong in a race car today.''
Earnhardt last raced in Kentucky in July, missing the past five races. Jeff Gordon will drive Earnhardt's No. 88 at Darlington.
Both Earnhardt and car owner Rick Hendrick expect him to return for Daytona 500 in February.
Earnhardt toured the garage, mixing with his team and friends. He says he is improving each day.
