Al-Attiyah nears victory; Sainz breaks suspension
Nasser Al-Attiyah won Thursday's 11th stage of the Dakar Rally, moving closer to clinching a victory in the two-week race that ends Sunday in Buenos Aires.
Defending champion Carlos Sainz of Spain, who trailed his Volkswagen teammate from Qatar by 18 minutes entering the stage, broke his right front suspension and lost more than an hour, and most likely any chance for victory.
Al-Attiyah finished the stage 1 minute, 13 seconds ahead of Stephane Peterhansel of France and 4:52 up on Giniel de Villiers of South Africa. Al-Attiyah leads De Villiers by 51:49 overall.
In bikes, Cyril Despres of France won the stage, 2:11 ahead of overall leader Marc Coma. The Spaniard leads Despres by 15:59 and is in good position to take the overall victory Sunday.
