D.C. United will not exercise its club option on forward Luciano Emilio, and the former Major League Soccer MVP will depart the team after failing to ignite its offense in a three-month trial.

Emilio, who scored 41 goals for D.C. from 2007-2009 and was picked the league's MVP in 2007 scoring 20 that season, signed a three-month contract with the club earlier this season. However, the 31-year-old Brazilian failed to score a goal in four matches, and made only one start.

United also announced that forward Adam Cristman will fly to Munich on Friday evening to have hernia surgery on Monday.

Cristman will return on Tuesday, then have his recovery supervised by United's medical staff.
