Chris Wondolowski's goal streak ended, but the San Jose Earthquakes got some late-game heroics from another source their last time out.
Maicon Santos, meanwhile, continues to enjoy a breakout season for D.C. United.
These top goal scorers will be in the spotlight Wednesday night with the Earthquakes unbeaten in six games and visiting United unbeaten in seven.
Wondolowski has eight goals to rank second in MLS with Santos in fourth place with six.
The Earthquakes striker had scored in five straight games before he failed to get a goal in Saturday's 2-1 win at Philadelphia. Substitute Steven Lenhart scored both goals, including the winner in the final seconds of stoppage time.
"I've had some dramatic ones, but that was a good win, a good goal," Lenhart told the Earthquakes' official website. "Whether you start or whether you come in, you're still competing and trying to score."
It marked the second straight week San Jose (6-1-1) scored to win in stoppage time, with Simon Dawkins and Wondolowski finding the back of the net in a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on April 21.
"It's magic," said Lenhart, named MLS player of the week. "We are finding a way to get it done and these games are important to win."
D.C. (4-2-3) has to be pleased with Santos, who is two goals shy of matching his career high from last year. The Brazilian forward's second goal of Saturday's 3-2 home win over Houston broke the game's final tie in the 70th minute.
Santos and Chris Pontius, who has four goals, have developed into a lethal forward tandem for D.C.
"Maicon is a big boy and willing to do a lot of the work as far as holding the balls up and fighting," coach Ben Olsen said. "Chris is very mobile underneath and behind. He plays off (Maicon) very well. For now, it's a good partnership."
D.C. is 4-0-3 since losing its first two games while San Jose is 5-0-1 since its lone defeat.
United's last eight-game unbeaten streak was a 9-0-4 run Aug. 5-Oct. 13, 2007.
"It is obviously one of our goals to put some streaks together," Pontius said. "If you look at the past four games, four Eastern Conference teams, we come out with 10 points out of 12. I think that's pretty good for us, especially when you are looking at the Eastern Conference."
The Earthquakes enjoyed an 11-game home unbeaten streak (5-0-6) in this series before Dwayne De Rosario scored twice in United's 2-0 victory July 30.
De Rosario, the reigning league MVP, finally scored his first goal Saturday after leading MLS with 16 in 2011. He has been more of a playmaker this year, with his five assists tying him for second in the league with New York's Thierry Henry.
De Rosario began his MLS career with San Jose from 2001-05 and has five goals and three assists against his first club in the league.
San Jose hasn't gone unbeaten in seven straight games since a 4-0-5 streak July 12-Sept. 13, 2008.
