Seattle coach Sigi Schmid for game, fined $2,000
Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid was suspended for a game and fined $2,000 by MLS on Friday for comments about the officials during and after his team's 0-0 tie with Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night.
''Sigi Schmid's comments earlier this week about the officiating were unacceptable,'' MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. ''MLS requires that its players, coaches, and club leadership maintain proper respect for the officials at all times.''
Schmid criticized referee Ricardo Salazar at halftime, saying it's ''nightmare'' when he officiates.
The coach was more diplomatic after the match.
''I don't want any more questions about Salazar, but the thing is, our fans know his name,'' Schmid said. ''I don't think many fans know the name of the referee. I think that's an indication.''
