Sanvezzo leads Whitecaps past Impact 3-0

Camilo Sanvezzo scored two second-half goals to lead the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Impact on Saturday.

Kenny Miller scored from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute as Vancouver kept its MLS playoff hopes alive. The Whitecaps (11-10-8), who were seventh in the Western Conference at the beginning of the day, ended a five-game winless run and picked up only their second victory in 10 games.

It was the second 3-0 loss in a row for the Impact (13-9-6), who also lost a CONCACAF Champions League match Tuesday night in San Jose by the same score.

Vancouver struck first after Nigel Reo-Coker blew past 37-year-old Alessandro Nesta on the right side. As he crossed the ball, defender Hassoun Camara fell and, as he was getting up, Matt Watson's shot hit his arm.

Referee Jorge Gonzalez had no choice but to call a penalty, and Miller cashed in for his eighth goal of the year.

Montreal turned up the pressure in the second half. Felipe Martins' volley of a pass from Justin Mapp hit the bar. Patrice Bernier had a shot tipped by goaltender David Ousted and off the bar.

Camilo scored in the 87th minute on a counterattack and added another in the 90th, giving the substitute 16 goals on the season.

Martins will sit out Montreal's next game after picking up his fifth yellow card for a dive in the Vancouver area.

Miller was substituted in the 60th minute by Camilo and Russell Teibert went in after 65 minutes for Tommy Heinemann.

It was the third game in eight days for Montreal after a 2-1 home loss to Columbus last weekend and the loss in San Jose.
