New York Red Bulls 2, New England Revolution 2
Tim Cahill's header in the final seconds of stoppage time lifted New York to a 2-2 draw with the New England Revolution on Saturday night, clinching a playoff berth for the Red Bulls.
New England (11-11-9) trailed, 1-0 until the last five minutes, getting a penalty kick from Lee Nguyen in the 85th minute and a breakaway goal from Diego Fagundez in the 90th.
During the closing seconds of stoppage time, Jonathan Steele lifted a free kick from the left side toward the goal for the Red Bulls (15-9-8) and Revolution keeper Matt Reis punched the ball in the air. Cahill headed it high from the middle of the box into the net for the tie. The Red Bulls are unbeaten in their last six games (4-0-2).
Columbus Crew 0, Sporting KC 1
Ike Opara scored in the 17th minute and Sporting Kansas City beat the Columbus Crew 1-0 on Saturday night.
Kansas City (15-10-6) entered with the best goals-against average in MLS (0.97) and prevented the Crew from attacking through the midfield as Jimmy Nielsen made his only save on Federico Higuain's 30-yard free kick in the 77th minute. Nielsen's 11th shutout moved KC to within two points of Eastern Conference leader New York.
''All 10 guys worked very hard in front of me and had huge discipline in the performance today,'' Nielsen said. ''We know Columbus has very dangerous guys up front. We wanted to avoid giving them any room to play in.''
The Crew (13-14-5) had a three-game winning streak stopped and are two points out of the final playoff spot in the East with two games left.
Philadelphia Union 1, Toronto FC 0
Kleberson scored on a free kick from 25 yards out in stoppage time, lifting the Philadelphia Union to a 1-0 victory over Toronto FC.
Kleberson's goal came just about at the end of six minutes of stoppage time and extended Philadelphia's winning streak to two.
The Union (12-10-9) moved past Chicago into fifth place in the Eastern Conference.
Philadelphia seemed headed for a third draw against Toronto FC this season, especially when Fabinho was issued a red card in the 77th minute, sending it a man down.
Kleberson, who had been acquired in a trade for Freddy Adu, was a late substitution and scored his first MLS goal.
Toronto FC (5-16-11) has the second-fewest wins in MLS, behind only D.C. United (3-22-6).
Real Salt Lake 1, Dallas 1
Kenny Cooper scored the tying goal in the 72nd minute to lift FC Dallas to a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday night.
Salt Lake (15-10-7) extended its winless stretch at home to three matches across all competitions. Salt Lake managed to strike first after halftime on a goal from Alvaro Saborio in the 60th minute despite being down a man for the bulk of the match.
Saborio got under a bouncing long ball as three Dallas players closed in on it at the same time. Saborio hesitated a moment at the top of the box and then turned and threaded the ball inside the left post.
Cooper tied it for Dallas (10-10-11), which snapped a three-game losing streak. Je-Vaughn Watson beat Tony Beltran down the right side and fired a shot at Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando. His shot was deflected by Rimando out to Cooper at the right post. Cooper collected the ball and fired it past Rimando inside the opposite post.
Colorado Rapids 5, Seattle Sounders 1
Deshorn Brown scored twice, the first coming 13 seconds into the game, and the Colorado Rapids beat the undermanned Seattle Sounders 5-1 Saturday night.
Brown's initial goal set the record for the quickest in franchise history. Dwayne De Rosario holds the MLS mark with his score 11 seconds in for San Jose against Dallas on Sept. 27, 2003.
''Of course we wanted to start quickly,'' Brown said. ''That's why we wanted to run that play, one we had worked hard often in practice.''
On the opening score, Gabriel Torres gained control of the ball along the west sideline and found Brown alone. Brown made several strides before releasing a low driving shot that got past goalkeeper Michael Gspurning's desperation dive.
''I ran hard to a spot,'' Brown said. ''The ball came my way and I just took it.''
Dillon Powers, Gabriel Torres and Drew Moor added goals for Colorado (13-9-9). The Rapids, 4-2-0 over their last six games, moved into third place ahead of idle Los Angeles in the Western Conference.
