Toronto 1, Montreal Impact 0
Needing a win to secure an MLS playoff berth without help from other teams, the Montreal Impact fell flat. Again.
The Impact turned in a woeful first-half performance and were beaten 1-0 by a Toronto team that started the day 23 points behind its Canadian rival.
Robert Earnshaw scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 16th minute for Toronto (6-17-11), which could have led by three after the first 45 minutes of the regular-season finale for both clubs.
Once a force in the East, the Impact have collected four of a possible 24 points available over their last eight games (1-6-1).
Philadelphia Union 1, Sporting KC 2
Lawrence Olum scored in stoppage time to give Sporting Kansas City a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.
Graham Zusi also scored for Kansas City (17-10-7), which will claim the Supporters Shield for the best record in the MLS if New York loses or draws Sunday against Chicago. Philadelphia was eliminated from playoff contentions with the loss and finished the season 12-12-10.
Zusi opened the scoring in the 47th minute. Jack McInerney scored his team-best 12th goal to tie it for Philadelphia in the 88th minute.
Philadelphia lost its final two games and missed the playoffs for the third time in four seasons. The Union played without midfielder and captain Brian Carroll because of yellow card accumulation.
San Jose Earthquakes 2, Dallas 1
Chris Wondolowski and Walter Martinez each scored and the San Jose Earthquakes beat FC Dallas 2-1 Saturday in the season finale for both teams.
The Earthquakes came into the game in contention for a playoff berth, but would have needed to score 13 goals and have Colorado lose Vancouver on Sunday.
Stephen Keel scored in the 90th minute for FC Dallas, which already had been eliminated from playoff contention.
David Bingham made his first start of the season for the Earthquakes.
San Jose's victory gave the retiring Ramiro Corrales a successful send off. The last original member of the MLS from 1996, Corrales made his first start since Sept. 14 and had two chances to score in the first 11 minutes.
The Earthquakes finished the season with a seven-match unbeaten streak and a 16-game unbeaten run at home.
Dallas, which ended its home season with a victory its last time out, went 1-5-1 over its last seven games.
Chivas USA 0, Portland Timbers 5
Diego Valeri scored two first-half goals and the Portland Timbers cruised to a 5-0 victory over Chivas USA on Saturday night.
The win gives Portland the regular-season Western Conference title and with it home-field advantage through at least the first two rounds of the playoffs. Portland (14-5-15) will open the playoffs with an away match on Nov. 2 or 3 against either Seattle, Colorado or the LA Galaxy.
With the result, Chivas (6-20-4) became the 15th team in league history to finish a season with at least 20 losses.
Valeri scored in 16th and 29th minutes and assisted on Rodney Wallace's 34th-minute goal. Ryan Johnson and Will Johnson scored second-half goals to provide the final margin.
Chivas played without starting goalkeeper Dan Kennedy due to an abdominal strain.
