Freddy Adu to train with Rayo Vallecano
Freddy Adu is set to become the latest young Major League Soccer star to head to Europe for some extra off-season training, though he will be the first to be heading to Spain to do so.
Adu will be joining Spanish side Rayo Vallecano for a two-week training stint. Adu’s agent, Richard Motzkin of Wasserman Media Group, confirmed the training stint to FOX Soccer.
“Freddy is looking to build on the summer he had at the Gold Cup, and the fall he had with Philadelphia,” Motzkin said. “The Union have been very understanding about finding an opportunity to train this winter and going to Spain should be a good experience for him."
Adu, 22, joined the Philadelphia Union last summer, and just recently completed a training camp with the U.S. Under-23 national team. He will be spending time with a Vallecano side that is currently sitting in 16th place in the Spanish First Division.
Rayo Vallecano is also a club that had been in talks with Adu about signing him last summer before Adu settled on a return to MLS. The upcoming stint with Vallecano is not a trial though.
Adu joins Brek Shea (Arsenal), Juan Agudelo (Liverpool, Stuttgart), Stefan Frei (Liverpool), Zac MacMath (Everton) and Tim Ream (West Brom), among others, to spend time training with European clubs this winter.
