Sir Alex Ferguson owns an apartment in New York and travels there often. Make no mistake, though, he's quite happy on the other side of the Atlantic.
''No,'' the Manchester United manager said bluntly when asked about a possible coaching stint in Major League Soccer. ''I'm 69, krikey!''
That probably won't stop talk about the Premier League's longest-tenured manager making the jump to MLS, a move taken by David Beckham among others.
Ferguson was in town Tuesday to preview his team's five-game U.S. tour this summer, which includes a match at Red Bull Arena against the MLS All-Stars on July 27.
MLS anticipates expanding to 20 teams, perhaps as early as 2013. The relaunched Cosmos from the defunct North American Soccer League could land a team. Given the old Cosmos' penchant for star power, Ferguson clearly would be a logical fit.
But Ferguson, who has been coaching Man United since 1986, insists he's not thinking in such terms.
''The sand is drifting through,'' Ferguson said. ''When I'm finished with United, in a couple of years or so, that'll be it for me.''
